Character Gender: Male
Alternate Universe
Canon Point: A few days into the Holy Grail war
Background Link: Wiki link.
AU Background: Lancer comes from an alternate universe where he was summoned for the Fifth Holy Grail War by a Rin who was given to the Matou family instead of Sakura. Zouken tried to get Rin to summon a Beserker class servant, but she purposefully blotched the summoning as an act of defiance and instead summoned Lancer. Because of this Lancer was never summoned by Bazett, and Kirei Kotomine never killed Bazett in order to make Lancer his own servant. Because of this Lancer holds no hate for the priest, as he was never watched him kill his first Master.

Another way things are different is that Lancer is corrupted by the Prana that Rin provides. This means multiple things. First, is that Lancer can't become intangible like other Servants. He is physically tied to the world around him. This means he can't slip into spirit form. While normally he wears minimal armor in order to maximize his speed, with his dark form he wears more armor. In battle he's much more reckless, which is saying something considering how agressive he is normally.

One of the more drastic changes is Rin being from the Matou family rather than the Tohsaka family. Because of this, Rin rather than Sakura went through the sexual and physical abuse that comes with being the heir of the Matou clan. She's more calloused than her normal self, and she took on the role of fighting for the Matou family during the Fifth Grail War. Zouken, leader of the Matou household, tried to get Rin to summon a Beserker class Servant, but in a subtle moment of defiance she botched the summoning and summoned Lancer instead.

Another detail that changes in the AU is that Rin never used her most valuable gem to save Shirou after Lancer pierces Shirou's heart with his spear. Because of this Shirou never returned home and summoned Saber. Shirou never took part in the Fifth Grail War, and considering that he's the main character of Fate/Stay Night this is a huge change. Shirou never goes on to affect the events of the Fifth Grail War, he never allies with Rin Tohsaka, and all of his influence on the war is removed. This causes the war to play out radically differently.
Personality: What defines Lancer the most is his sense of loyalty and duty. Once he makes a promise, he's always sure to follow through. He doesn't take well to traitors, and in his eyes a man is only as good as his word. Even if his oaths put him at a disadvantage, he always follows through with them. He has a strong sense of dignity. He has a hard time killing innocent unarmed people, and refuses to kill women. He appreciates these qualities in others, and he can't get along well with a coward or a liar. If a person has no pride or dignity, Lancer won't tolerate them. By Lancer's standards, there's nothing worse than a traitor.

That's not to say he's above bending the rules. If he's told to do something he doesn't agree with personally, he'll try to find a way around it. For example, his master ordered him to kill Archer. Archer was already supposed to fight another man, and he himself was already weakened. Lancer figured that Archer was going to die either way, so his orders were meaningless. Archer had kidnapped a girl known as Rin Tohsaka, who Lancer highly respected, so he went to go free her while Archer was fighting another man. As far as Lancer was concerned, his order had been completed.

Outside of battle, Lancer is fairly casual. There's no formalities to his language, and he speaks plainly and clearly. If someone is being stupid, he'll tell them that. Some would say he's brash and arrogant with his words, and while there is some truth to that he's simply being honest. While he'll never betray his allies, he's perfectly willing to point out their flaws. If he would rather be cooperating with another person, he'll state that as well.

Lancer has an extremely sharp wit, always having a snappy comeback on hand. He tends about to joke about everything, even in rather dire situations. He can use his wit to make light of a rather grim situation, or turn it against his enemies. He can also be a bit dense when it comes to modern things, failing to see how something like hitting on random women could be considered sexual assault. He's still stuck in the ancient way of thinking about things.

The prana from Dark Rin's prana impacts his personality as well. Normally Lancer is considered Lawful Neutral. He follows his own path, but his word is what binds him. He'll keep any promise or oath he makes, and he values his workd more than his life. In fact, he originally died trying to keep all of the promises he swore during the course of his life.

Lancer Alter is a bit more darker, taking the Neutral Evil alignment. For him, fighting is the both the means and the end. Violence justifies everything, and if there's a fight you can bet that he's in the thick of it, taking on all challenges. He's a blood knight of the most brutal sorts. Showing no caution, he'll take on as many opponents as he can. To him the Grail War is just one big battle, and he often found himself at odds with Rin who preferred to be more cautious.

That's not to mean that he's some psychopath that enjoys killing, although a lot of his fights end with his opponent dead. For Lancer Alter it's all about the challenge. If someone he deemed unworthy of challenging him tried to fight him, Lancer would just dismiss him as not being worth the effort. If the person could put up a fight, Lancer would put all of his strength into trying to cut them down ruthlessly.
Abilities:Lancer is a Heroic Spirit, that is to say a hero who ascended to a higher plane of existence upon their death. Normally they can not be summoned to this world, but through the power of the Holy Grail they can be brought into the world. The Holy Grail supplies the massive amount of mana, and the Master summons them. The Heroic Spirit then becomes the Servant of the Master, and together they fight to obtain the Holy Grail. The Master supplies mana to their Servant which sustains them, and in return the Servant fights for the Master. Their contract is represented by three marks on the Master's hand. These marks are known as the Command Spell. The Master can use a Command Spell in order to force the Servant to obey a command that they usually wouldn't obey. Command Spells can also be used to break the laws of physics. For example of a Servant and a Master are separated by a great distance such as several miles, the Master can use a Command Spell and order the Servant to come. Rather than having to travel the distance, the Command Spell will distort the space time continuum and instantly bring the Servant to the Master.

Each Servant has a Noble Phantasm which is a representation of the hero. For most Servants this is a weapon or special technique, and Lancer falls into this category. His Noble Phantasm is the Gae Bolg, a large red lance. The Noble Phantasm has two special techniques. The first is the Piercing Lance of Death Thorns. This technique causes the opponent's heart to be pierced no matter what. It works by reversing the law of cause and effect. Because the heart is pierced, the lance is thrust. It's impossible to dodge once the lance is thrust due to the fact that the pierced heart is a foregone conclusion. The best defense against such a technique is to not let him thrust at all. If he does thrust, the only way to dodge is not to be extremely fast, but rather to be extremely lucky or be able to manipulate fate. The target itself does not have to be the heart but rather can be any target. However against an opponent the heart is generally chosen due to how fatal a blow is.

The second technique is the Thrusting Lance of Death Flight. In this technique, Lancer leaps up into the sky and hurls Gae Bolg at his opponent. Unlike the other technique, this one emphasizes attack power over aiming and attempts to destroy entire enemy units in a single blow. If the Death Thorn is a bullet, then the Death Throw is an explosion. It strikes an opponent, no matter how many times it is dodged. At it's height, it can target up to fifty people.

Lancer also doesn't give up easily. He's part god, which makes him extremely powerful. Even on the verge of death, he can still fight. Even after taking a deadly blow he can stay alive for several minutes. His strength and speed are also extraordinary, and he is capable of leaping a hundred meters. He doesn't have the best luck though.

In addition to this, Lancer has some magical attributes of his own. He's a master of magecraft, having been trained by one of the best witches of his age. Using his runes, he can do anything from locating a person in a building to creating massive fires.
